Grandson Kills Grandma and Escapes With Her Head

In a sequence of events that has profoundly impacted the Santa Rosa, California community, Luis Gustavo Arroyo-Lopez, 24, has admitted guilt to the murder of his grandmother, Elvia Lopez-Arroyo, 64. The shocking occurrence happened shortly after Arroyo-Lopez’s release from state prison, where he served time for assault and weapons possession offenses.

The Santa Rosa police were called to Ms. Lopez-Arroyo’s residence on November 2, 2023, following a horrifying report of a murder. Officers found Ms. Lopez-Arroyo decapitated in her home upon their arrival.

The San Francisco Police Department apprehended the suspect, Arroyo-Lopez, two days later. At the time of his arrest, he was accused of murder and breaching the conditions of his post-release community supervision. Police recovered several weapons from the home, but the exact murder weapon remains unknown. Later that evening, authorities discovered Ms. Lopez-Arroyo’s head near the Santa Rosa Creek.

The case took an unsettling turn when a friend, who discovered Ms. Lopez-Arroyo’s body, could only utter, “No head!” A neighbor, Jessica, confirmed this account to CBS News. Jessica reported seeing Arroyo-Lopez walking earlier towards his grandmother’s home “at a normal pace,” with Ms. Lopez-Arroyo appearing “surprised and happy” to see her grandson.

The investigation later suggested that the attack was not random. Arroyo-Lopez allegedly left the scene with his grandmother’s head, indicating a disturbing level of planning and violence.

The community has responded with grief and support. One of Ms. Lopez-Arroyo’s other grandchildren started a GoFundMe campaign to cover the funeral costs, describing her as a “doting grandmother” who “cherished all her grandchildren deeply.” The fundraising page touching adds, “She didn’t deserve what was done to her.”

Legal proceedings continue, and Arroyo-Lopez is being held without bail, with sentencing set for June 27, 2024. Despite entering a guilty plea on June 4, 2024, he has not revealed any reason for his actions, leaving the family and community struggling with unanswered questions about this horrifying crime.
