“West Side Story” Star Dead at 88

Tony Mordente, an accomplished actor, dancer, and choreographer recognized for his significant roles in both Broadway and film versions of West Side Story, has passed away at the age of 88. His family announced his death on June 11, 2024. Mordente was a resident of Henderson, Nevada.

Anthony Charles Mordente Jr., known professionally as Tony Mordente, was born in Brooklyn, New York City on December 3, 1935. His journey into the world of performing arts started when he was 13, as his mother enrolled him in dance school to channel his energy. This decision led to his acceptance into the High School of Performing Arts and a scholarship at the American Ballet Theater School. Renowned choreographer Michael Kidd discovered Mordente during his time at the American Ballet Theater School.

Mordente’s career took a significant turn in 1956 when Kidd selected him for a role in the Broadway production of “Li’l Abner.” In 1957, he joined the inaugural Broadway cast of “West Side Story,” taking on the role of A-Rab. This role was crucial in his life as it led him to meet Chita Rivera, who played Anita and later became his wife. Speaking about their marriage, Mordente once commented, “A Jet marrying a Shark. It was quite a thing.” Their marriage lasted from 1957 to 1966. Rivera passed away in January.

When “West Side Story” made its way to London, Mordente took over the choreographic responsibilities from Jerome Robbins. His role as Action in the 1961 film adaptation of the musical further established his standing in dance and choreography.

Transitioning to television in the mid-1970s, Mordente displayed his versatility by directing episodes of notable shows including “Rhoda,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and “7th Heaven.” He also choreographed for various television variety shows such as “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.”

Mordente’s influence in the arts continues through his daughters, Lisa and Adriana Mordente. His daughter Lisa received a Tony nomination in 1982 for her role in “Marlowe,” signifying the enduring impact of Mordente’s legacy.

Throughout his life, Tony Mordente demonstrated a deep commitment and exceptional talent in the performing arts. His significant contributions to Broadway and television have left a lasting impression in dance and choreography, ensuring his enduring memory as a key figure in the industry.
