Actress Known for “Grease” Musical Dead at 72

Actress Susan Buckner, born in Seattle, Washington and prominently known for her role as cheerleader Patty Simcox in the renowned 1978 musical “Grease,” has passed away at the age of 72. The news of her demise on May 2 was announced by publicist Melissa Berthier on behalf of the Buckner family. She reported that Buckner’s passing was peaceful and surrounded by family, but did not disclose the cause of her death.

In a statement, Samantha Mansfield, Buckner’s daughter, shared her deep bond with her mother, whom she referred to as a source of “magic” and her “best friend”. She highlighted that her mother’s passing leaves a significant void not only in the family but also among those who have been touched by Buckner’s vivacious spirit.

Buckner’s life of fame started in 1952 when she began her journey on the pageant circuit, winning the title of Miss Washington in 1971. She went on to represent her state in the Miss America pageant in 1972. These achievements paved the way for her entry into the entertainment industry, where she became part of The Golddiggers, a popular all-female singing and dancing group on “The Dean Martin Show.”

Her television career advanced with appearances on prominent shows including “The Mac Davis Show,” “Sonny and Cher,” and “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.” However, it was her role in “Grease” that established her in American pop culture. As Patty Simcox, Buckner’s portrayal of high school spirit was a source of inspiration for viewers.

Buckner continued her acting career into the 1980s with roles in television series like “The Love Boat” and “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” and films such as “Police Academy 6: City Under Siege.” Despite her various roles, “Grease” remained her most notable contribution to the film industry.

Choosing to prioritize family, Buckner stepped back from the entertainment industry to raise her two children. She later directed children’s theater at an elementary school in Florida and taught dance at a gym in Coral Gables.

Buckner’s legacy continues through her loving family, which includes her daughter Samantha Mansfield, son Adam Josephs, grandchildren, and her longtime partner, Al.
