Maryland Man Found Dead After Disappearing in Surf

A 31-year-old swimmer from Savage, Maryland, was found dead at North Shores Beach, north of Rehoboth Beach, on Monday morning, September 4.

The day before, Richard Boateng was reported missing, having last been seen in the surf close to Rehoboth Avenue at about 5:45 pm.

Upon hearing of his disappearance, off-duty lifeguards started an immediate search in the nearby waters. Multiple agencies assisted in the search, which continued well into Sunday evening, September 3.

On Monday, a body was located by paramedics and identified as Boateng. There is currently no indication of any foul play in connection to his death.

Over the past Labor Day weekend, there were rip-current warnings active in the mid-Atlantic due to Tropical Storm Idalia’s effects. This storm caused heightened surf conditions. In light of these conditions, Captain Jennifer Stockwell from Coast Guard Sector Virginia urged the community to be vigilant. She stressed the significance of keeping updated with weather advisories, being aware of personal swimming capabilities, and having an emergency plan if venturing into the water.
