Ivanka Trump Wins: $250M Lawsuit Dismissed

A state appeals court has dismissed a $250 million lawsuit against Ivanka Trump by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The lawsuit alleged business fraud during Ivanka Trump’s tenure at the the family business, the Trump Organization.

A panel consisting of five appellate judges has ruled that the claims presented by Attorney General Letitia James against Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter, have exceeded the statute of limitations in the state. The panel further stated that the newer allegations of impropriety occurred after Ivanka Trump had moved from her role in the family business to a position in her father’s White House administration.

The court ruling has provided clarity on the matter, emphasizing that the allegations against Ivanka Trump cannot be supported for any claims made after February 6, 2016, and thus should have been dismissed. Additionally, the court clarified that claims appearing before July 13, 2014, or after February 6, 2016, depending on the defendant, cannot be pursued by Attorney General James.

The lawsuit, which was initiated in September 2022, targeted the Trump Organization, former President Donald Trump, and three of his children—Ivanka, Donald Jr., and Eric—as defendants. Attorney General James alleged that they had engaged in misleading practices toward banks, insurance companies, and other parties for the valuation of Trump’s assets, such as golf courses and Mar-a-Lago. Seeking $250 million in damages and a ban on the Trump family conducting business in New York, James pursued the case vigorously.

While the lawsuit will continue against the remaining defendants, the court indicated that the case may face more constraints. A spokesperson for the Trump family expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, considering it a crucial step toward dismissing a case they believe should never have been filed. They further emphasized the importance of enforcing the law appropriately to limit the Attorney General’s broad authority.

In response, Attorney General James’ office highlighted substantial evidence of fraudulent valuation and asset misrepresentation by Trump and the Trump Organization. They remain committed to holding the former president accountable for the alleged fraud.

Donald Trump denies any wrongdoing, dismissing the allegations against him.
