Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, wanted to show his “spiritual girlfriend,” Juanita, to his friends. So, on Saturday, March 4, he took “her” with him to an archaeological site in Puno, Puerto Rico, where he was meeting up with them.
He was quickly apprehended by cops.
Experts believe Bermejo’s girlfriend is a mummified human who could be 600 to 800 years old.
Puno is located in Southeast Peru, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. It is a well-known remnant of the Inca Empire, which began in the 1200s and lasted until around 1533.
According to reports, Bermejo appeared drunk, so police decided to approach him and his group. This is when they came across the centuries-old mummy.
“Juanita” was also discovered to be a 4 foot 11 inch male. According to experts, the body was at least 45 years old at the time of the man’s death. The body was also discovered wrapped in bandages and in the fetal position, which was common for pre-Hispanic burials.
Bermejo, who previously worked as a food delivery man, transported the corpse in a thermal delivery bag from “PedidosYa,” a Latin American delivery app and service.
Bermejo claims that his father brought the mummy home with him more than 20 years ago. He also stated that the corpse is usually found in his bedroom, next to his television. He went on to say that he “takes care of it,” much like a spiritual girlfriend.
The mummy has been handed over to the Ministry of Culture, which is in charge of handling and preserving local heritage. Meanwhile, Bermejo and his friends, aged 23 to 26, have been detained by police while the case is being investigated.
