A three-year-old child was seen being pushed onto the Gateway Transit Center MAX platform tracks in Northeast Portland, Oregon by a 32-year-old homeless woman on December 28. Surveillance footage recorded the incident.
Brianna Lace Workman has been charged and accused of a series of crimes after the District Attorney’s office released surveillance footage showing how Workman got up from the bench she was seated on and shoved the kid in front of her.
Workman did not appear to have any prior contact or argument with the child or the child’s mother before pushing the three-year-old onto the tracks in the apparently unprovoked attack.
The incident has caused outrage in the local community, and many people have taken to social media to express their shock and dismay at Workman’s actions. One netizen commented that they are not surprised by this incident as drug use and mental illness is prevalent around the Portland Max station.
The little girl fell face-first into the metal rails before a bystander came to her aid and rescued her before the train arrived. The fall resulted in a red mark on her forehead and a severe headache. Fortunately, the child did not sustain other serious injuries.
Oregon Live said court records show that Workman is listed as a homeless person in Oregon. She has been charged with attempted assault in the first degree, recklessly endangering another person, assault in the third degree, disorderly conduct in the second degree, and interfering with public transportation.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Workman, including one for which the state of Oregon allows for pretrial detention. She is being held without bail.
